About the Department

The Department of Medical Diagnostics (Medical Laboratory Science) at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) is committed to setting the standard for diagnostic excellence in Africa and globally. We are a dynamic academic and research environment focused on training the next generation of highly competent laboratory scientists and advancing critical biomedical knowledge. 

The Department operates from the main campus of the KNUST in Kumasi and its satellite campus in Obuasi. The Obuasi satellite campus extends the Department’s mandate by improving access to quality medical laboratory science education, strengthening practical training through closer linkage with clinical and diagnostic facilities, and supporting community-focused health and laboratory services. This dual-campus structure enhances student training, fosters regional capacity building, and reinforces the Department’s contribution to national healthcare delivery and workforce development.

Mission

To provide leadership and transformative excellence in laboratory diagnostics and biomedical sciences through advanced teaching, impactful research, and cutting-edge clinical-practice skills, thereby producing highly competent medical laboratory scientists and biomedical postgraduates. These professionals are equipped to contribute meaningfully to high-quality healthcare delivery, public health security, and innovative biomedical research both in Ghana and on the global stage.
